Mathematics Curriculum

Intent Statement

At Selside we believe in a broad and balanced curriculum. Our ambitious Mathematics curriculum fulfils the National Curriculum requirements and we use the White Rose scheme of work as a tool to help us deliver the objectives. The scheme of work is coherently planned, sequenced and has a rigorous ‘small steps’ progression that enables children to reach their full potential as mathematicians. Pupils gain the knowledge and skills required through a mastery-based learning approach and our skills progression allows teaching and learning of Mathematics to be easily adapted to meet the needs of all our pupils. Mathematics has meaningful links to other subjects such as Science, PE, and Art and Design. As a C of E school our values underpin our daily lesson and pupils learn the importance of this. Our core Values of Courage, Respect, Friendship and Thankfulness are golden threads throughout all our teaching and learning. Having Courage to have a go, make mistakes and try again is key to develop positive attitudes and interest in Mathematics. Children think of Friendship to offer support and ask for help if they need it.

Implementation

In the Early Years developing a strong grounding in number is essential so that all children develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically. Teaching and learning follow White Rose Maths, underpinned by Development Matters, September 2021. At Selside School, we also use the resource Numberblocks to introduce early number to our youngest pupils.

  • Year Six running fund raising events.
  • Remote Learning Challenges
  • Orienteering Club & Competitions
  • STEM days
  • Number Day
  • Teachers versus pupils Times Tables Rock Star challenges
  • Rock Star Day
  • Learning outside the classroom

Impact

We want our Pupils to become Mathematicians who have:

  • An understanding of the important concepts and an ability to make connections within mathematics.
  • A broad range of skills in using and applying mathematics.
  • Fluent knowledge and recall of number facts and the number system.
  • The ability to show initiative in solving problems in a wide range of contexts, including the new or unusual.
  • The ability to think independently and to persevere when faced with challenges, showing a confidence of success.
  • The ability to embrace the value of learning from mistakes and false starts.
  • The ability to reason, generalise and make sense of solutions.
  • Fluency in performing written and mental calculations and mathematical techniques.
  • A wide range of mathematical vocabulary.
  • A commitment to and passion for the subject.
