At Selside we use homework for a variety of different purposes. We recognise that many of our children also take part in extra- curricular activities both through school and outside. We aim to make any homework set purposeful and to support work covered in class. It also allows parents to see what their child understands and to work together on projects.

Since reading is central to everything that we do in school, the most important homework is regular reading; initially to an adult and then as your child becomes a more confident reader, to themselves. Parents can support by making reading a regular part of your child’s routine. Alongside hearing your child read and talking about the book, we would also encourage you to regularly read to your child.

Other homework in KS1  includes spellings  and number facts to learn. We also send home the phonic sounds that your child is working on.

In KS2 homework will usually involve spellings to learn, some punctuation or grammar work and maths questions to re-enforce the class learning.  Sometimes children may be asked to find out information for a topic.

We aim to give homework out on a Thursday. It should be returned to school on a Wednesday. We do see it as important that it is completed to the best of each child’s ability, especially for the older children as this is good preparation for secondary school.

We do try to be flexible over homework and responsive to all the other demands on time. We do not generally set homework in the last week of each term. Please come and ask if you have any queries over homework.
