Intent
At Selside School, our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is taught with a focus on oracy to help support the reading and writing of French. Learning another language helps open your eyes to another part of the world, so we make sure incorporate learning about French culture as well. Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum fulfils the National Curriculum requirements and children are taught using resources including songs, action rhymes, poems, authentic French items, videos and using cross curricular links. The curriculum is planned to revisit and build-on previous learning, consolidating vocabulary and grammar throughout Key Stage 2. Our teaching enables all learners to gain the knowledge, skills and cultural capital they need to succeed in life, widen their horizons and give them the confidence to explore internationally as they grow older.
Implementation
Children in Class 2 and 3 are taught French every week using the Cave languages programme. Classes follow a curriculum which develops their speaking, listening and comprehension skills. The emphasis is on fun, interactive tasks which help the children gain confidence in the language and ultimately prepare them for secondary school.

Enrichment and culture capital
French has meaningful links to several other curriculum areas such as Maths, Art, Geography and History. Our core values play an important part in our MFL curriculum: promoting respect for other cultures and languages, learning a new language to improve communication, empathy and develop friendships and showing courage when speaking a new language. The children not only learn a new language, but learn about and have opportunities to experience elements of a different culture. In order to consolidate learning, key vocabulary is used in other curriculum areas.
Impact
